Doctors Choose Neocate For Infants With Cow's Milk Allergy

Neocate Baby Formula Lawsuit News

Doctors that prescribe Neocate may be harming an infants chances of normal bone development

Tuesday, October 23, 2018 - There is no more critical time in the physical development of a child than the first six months of life. An infant's' proper development rests on the parent feeding them the most complete nutrition possible. Most mothers naturally breastfeed their children and gradually introduce nutritious pureed fruits and vegetables. Mothers that are incapable or unwilling to breastfeed their child rely on infant formula. Neocate is a prescription infant formula that is prescribed primarily for children that are allergic to cow's milk.

The company's website claims that "Neocate is intended for the nutritional management of cow's milk allergy and other indications where an elemental diet is recommended and should be used under the direction of a healthcare professional. Neocate must be used under medical supervision after full consideration of all the feeding options, including breastmilk."

The Pharmaceutical Journal recently published that cow's milk allergy is associated with the symptoms of common "skin rashes, reflux, colic, and diarrhea in infants." Cow's milk allergy is often confused with lactose intolerance whose symptoms are "bloating, diarrhea and flatulence." Other signs of infant cow's milk allergy include vomiting, itching, swelling, eczema, and pink eye. Symptoms of severe cow's milk allergy can be "significant respiratory and/or cardiovascular symptoms."

Eczema

Children with cow's milk allergy often have a dry, itchy, red skin irritation that starts on their cheeks and spreads to other parts of the body. Doctors recommend cortisone creams and other lotions to reduce the dryness and discomfort.

Colic

When a baby cries for more than three hours in a day the problem could be colic due to a milk allergy. A baby is said to have colic when they experience the pain from gas trapped in the abdomen. Holding the baby upright could help to release the trapped gas.

Vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea are self-explanatory and can be the result of a cow's milk allergy. If these symptoms occur for more than a day or two parents are urged to seek the counsel of their GP. Physicians usually recommend that the parent stop feeding their child cow's milk or that a breastfeeding mother stop drinking cow's milk and to replace it with Neocate baby formula. While Neocate often relieves the symptoms of cow's milk allergy studies have found that the formula is lacking in phosphorous and potassium and can be responsible for insufficient bone development.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has published its report on the effects of Neocate baby formula on infant bone development. The report cites "Unexpected widespread hypophosphatemia and bone disease associated with elemental formula use in infants and children." More than 20 authors from the world's leading universities and hospitals endorsed the findings that accused Neocate baby formula of causing permanent and irreversible bone damage to infants that were fed a diet that consisted solely of Neocate baby formula for a period of time. Hypophosphatemia is a skeletal disease that is caused by an inadequate diet or the lack of absorption of the critical minerals of sodium, phosphorous, and potassium. Fifty-one children at 17 different institutions that were fed Neocate exclusively developed hypophosphatemia. 94% of all children studied developed bone fractures from lack consuming Neocate. Attorneys representing Neocate baby formula claims prove that contrary to marketing claims, some baby formulas are unsafe for infants and children.
