Neocate Baby Formula May Cause Childhood Bone Deformity

Neocate Baby Formula Lawsuit News

Parents are reporting that their children taking Neocate are experiencing abnormal bone development and unexplained bone fractures

Wednesday, October 10, 2018 - Neocate is a prescription food supplement that is designed to replace the animal protein found in cow's milk. On the surface, feeding an infant Neocate seems like the perfect solution for those youngsters with milk allergies and soy intolerances. According to the company's website, www.neocate.com, approximately 5% of infants have milk allergies that present themselves as skin rash, vomiting, reflux, diarrhea, and constipation. Other milk allergy symptoms include excessive crying, colic, wheezing, vomiting, and restless sleep. Mothers can pass unknowingly pass cow's milk to their children when they breastfeed. Children that are prescribed Neocate formula report that their skin rashes, vomiting, and diarrhea stopped within a few days of using Neocate. (1)

The families of children that have been given Neocate are now reporting health problems associated with the milk-replacement baby formula. One family was forced to rush their young daughter to the emergency room fearing that their baby was dying. The couple reported that their child was losing weight, not gaining as one would expect during the 7-plus weeks they had been feeding it Neocate. The child was extremely lethargic and could barely be awakened for feedings. Neocate, it is alleged, "does not contain some of the essential nutrients needed for babies to develop i.e. Potassium and Sodium."(2) As a result, as Neocate children grow up they can experience spontaneous, multiple and continuous bone fractures from insufficient bone density development. In another case, a young boy confined to a wheelchair with cerebral palsy was thought to be the victim of child abuse when he experienced multiple, spontaneous bone fractures. The father, knowing that he did nothing intentionally to hurt or endanger his son, saw a television ad from an attorney claiming that children that are given Neocate experience the same bone weakness issues due to the formula's lack of Phosphates, Potassium, and Sodium. Neocate, is all that Robbie ( the child in question) eats," said the father to www.clarionledger.com.(3) Local child services authorities dropped their charges of child neglect as a result of making the Neocate/bone fracture connection.

The science behind Neocate causing insufficient bone density was illustrated in the medical journal BONE. A report in the journal made the connection between Neocate and cases of hypophosphatemia that may be the cause of bone fractures. The National Institue of Health found that "Fifty-one children were identified at 17 institutions with EF(i.e. Neocate)-associated hypophosphatemia. Most children had complex illnesses and had been solely fed Neocate formula products for variable periods of time prior to presentation. Feeding methods varied. Hypophosphatemia was detected during evaluation of fractures or rickets. Increased alkaline phosphatase activity and appropriate renal conservation of phosphate were documented in nearly all cases. Skeletal radiographs demonstrated fractures, undermineralization, or rickets in 94% of the cases." When the study took the child's underlying illness into consideration, "almost all improved with the addition of supplemental phosphate or change to a different formula product." (4)

Neocate baby formula lawsuits are now being filed by parents of infants and children who suffered bone development problems after using Neocate.
